In 2001, the City of Bochum seized a unique opportunity and built, on the site where once the Ruhrlandhallehad stood, a new congress and events centre that meets all the technical and conceptual requirements made on a modern venue. The old Ruhrlandhalle, opened on July 18, 1964, and originally planned as a sports arena, was ultimately no longer able to keep pace with the competition from the region's other event venues.
Construction started in late 2001. The new congress and events centre, complete with its adjacent hotel, arose on its effectively "greenfield" site next to the "Ruhrstadion"stadium in less than six months, calculated from the laying of the foundation stone in February 2002 up to the topping out ceremony in July of the same year. The grandiose vision finally became reality in December of 2002: the completed RuhrCongress, a new face for Bochum.
The city began to welcome visitors from around the world in January, 2003, the RuhrCongressarousing its guests' enthusiasm at a scintillating opening ceremony. It has lost none of its original attraction in the intervening period. On the contrary: its acoustics and atmosphere enthuse visitors anew every day, while its service, mood, festive atmosphere and flair resound well beyond the bounds of the Ruhr. The RuhrCongress Bochum: a magnet to visitors from the very first minute.
